What you will learn


Lesson 1: Why behind VXLAN with BGP EVPN
Every data center engineer eventually meets a 4096 VLAN ceiling, a multi tenant separation request, or a Layer 2 stretch requirement that traditional VLAN simply cannot serve. This lesson sets the stage by showing the exact limits of the older design and the new pressure from cloud workloads. By the end you understand why VXLAN was invented, why a separate control plane was added later, and what BGP-EVPN brings to the table.

Lesson 2: Underlay and Overlay
The biggest source of confusion in VXLAN is the layered model. Once you see that the physical IP network (underlay) is just a transport, and that the tenant network (overlay) is a logical Layer 2 built on top, every other concept falls into place. This lesson builds that mental model with diagrams, then walks an end to end packet so you can see both layers in action.

Lesson 3: MTU Considerations in Underlay
A perfectly working IP underlay can still break VXLAN. The reason is the extra bytes that VXLAN adds to every frame. Standard 1500 byte MTU causes silent drops or fragmentation. This lesson shows exactly why jumbo MTU is required, where to set it, and how to verify that the path supports the new size.

Lesson 4: BUM Traffic handling in VXLAN
Broadcast, Unknown unicast and Multicast traffic must still reach every host inside a VNI. In a pure IP fabric there is no Layer 2 broadcast, so the design needs a workaround. This lesson explains the two main methods, multicast underlay and Ingress Replication, and helps you pick which one fits which deployment.

Lesson 5: Let us build Underlay of VXLAN
Theory without practice fades inside a week. In this lesson you open EVE-NG and configure the spine and leaf devices with IP routing so the underlay is ready to carry VXLAN frames. You see the routing tables, the loopback design, and the reason every choice was made.

Lesson 6: Flood and Learn in VXLAN
The first generation of VXLAN had no control plane. Switches discovered MAC addresses by flooding everything to everywhere, exactly like a hub. This lesson walks the full Flood and Learn frame path so you can see the waste, and so the upgrade to BGP-EVPN feels earned rather than mysterious.

Lesson 7: Why behind BGP-EVPN
Flooding does not scale. The industry already had a proven protocol for distributing reachability information across many devices, and that protocol is BGP. Adding the EVPN address family lets BGP carry MAC and IP information just like it carries IP prefixes. Lesson 8: VXLAN Control Plane: BGP EVPN
EVPN route types look intimidating until you see what each one solves. Route Type 2 carries MAC and IP. Route Type 3 handles BUM membership. Route Type 5 carries Layer 3 prefixes between VRFs. This lesson decodes each route type with packet captures and shows how the control plane keeps every leaf in sync.

Lesson 9: Inter and Intra-VXLAN Configuration
A real fabric must support both Layer 2 stretch within a single VNI and Layer 3 routing between different VNIs. Without both, the design is incomplete. This lesson configures Intra VXLAN bridging and Inter VXLAN routing on EVE-NG, with a clean packet walk for each case so you can explain the behavior in an interview.

Lesson 10: Enhancements due to BGP VXLAN
BGP-EVPN unlocks features that pure Flood and Learn cannot offer. ARP suppression saves uplink bandwidth. MAC mobility supports virtual machine moves across leafs. Anycast gateway lets every leaf act as the default gateway so workloads move without losing sessions. This lesson covers each enhancement with the why behind it.

Lesson 11: External Connectivity
A VXLAN fabric is useless if it cannot reach the outside world. The Border Leaf is the bridge between the fabric and the WAN, the internet, or another data center. Do I need BGP knowledge before I start?

Is OSPF or IS-IS required?

You need a working IGP for the underlay. You do not need to be an expert in either. If you want to strengthen your routing base first, please see Routing Fundamentals.

Is CCNA enough as a base?

Yes for most learners. If your CCNA is not done yet, please start with CCNA for Know Nothing Learner in English or Be Job Ready in Computer Networking in Hindi.
